The Rio Gallegos River

is nearly 300kms in length and has its origin in the Southern Andes with two pristine and very beautiful streams, the Penitente and the Ruebens. Winding its way through the wild Patagonian landscape.It emerges into the surprisingly mountainous area that encompasses the unique Las Buitreras beats, some 40kms from the river mouth. The flood plain that lies between these outcrops teems with birdlife, alongside large numbers of rheas, silver foxes, horses, hares, flamingos and guanacos.

LOOP Carbon Fiber Push Pole

In today's world of shallow water skiffs there is an arsenal of necessary fishing equipment typically found onboard, with one of the most important being a push pole. Without this critical item one would find themselves at an incredible disadvantage on the flats and at the mercy of the tide and wind. Trolling motors, although useful in some situations, are typically too noisy, spook fish, and can't operate in water as shallow as fish can go. Poling offers skiff based anglers the stealth needed to sneak up on wary fish and the ability to hold in places that fish travel through. Push poles come in an endless variety of sizes, materials, and lengths with the most critical features being weight and flex.

Recently, I got the opportunity to demo the new push pole from Loop tackle. Although new to the push pole game, Loop has designed one of the lightest and strongest push poles on the market. Through rigorous product development and testing Loop has produced an incredible fishing tool made from high quality carbon fiber that is feather light yet rigid enough to hold a larger skiff into the wind and current. This push pole is sectional and built to very tight specifications. It incorporates a ridged scrim surface that provides an unparalleled grip, even when wet! The joints are bonded using a proprietary process that guarantees a strong, sealed joint. The ferrules that connect the five-foot sections are made from graphite which makes for a lightweight connection that flexes evenly with the rest of the pole.

While many people are opposed to multi-piece push poles because of weak connections and water intrusion issues I have not had any of these problems arise after heavy use for 5 months. The Loop pole weighs 3.2 ounces per foot, with a 21' pole weighing roughly 4 lbs! The unique L foot pushes very well in marl and soft muddy bottom, which unplugs much better than the typical paddle versions out there. Both the foot and point are made from solid nylon plastic, a durable product that holds up to razor sharp oysters and coral.

Nordic Fly Fishers to distribute nationally

COEUR d'ALENE -- Joe Roope, owner of Castaway Fly Fishing Shop of Coeur d'Alene and a small group of Northwest investors have created a new company, Nordic Fly Fishers, USA, LLC, the United States distributorship of Loop Tackle Design AB of Sweden.

Loop Tackle, located in Akersberga, near Stockholm, was founded more than 30 years ago by current owner and CEO Christer Sjoberg. The company designs and manufactures fly fishing equipment, clothing and accessories.

Operating out of Coeur d'Alene, the main product lines Nordic Fly Fishers, USA, LLC, will distribute nationally include single- and double-handed fresh and saltwater fly fishing rods, fresh and salt water fly reels, waders, fishing jackets, vests, fly lines, warm and cold weather base layer clothing, and a select number of accessories.

"We are confident that our innovative and field-proven fly fishing gear and clothing will enjoy the same popularity and fierce customer loyalty in the USA that we have in the rest of the world," Roope said.

Loop products have been offered at Castaway for the past four years and the longtime Coeur d'Alene fly fishing shop has been distributing the products throughout the West under a limited territory distribution agreement, as well as being the USA service and warranty center for the company.

Castaway is managed by Roope and his nephew, Jeff Wilson. The fly fishing shop was founded more than 40 years ago by Joe's father, the late Joe Roope Sr.

Wilson will take on most of the day-to-day responsibilities of fly shop management while Joe Roope assumes the role of president of Loop Tackle, USA.

The shop offers a full complement of fly fishing gear, clothing, hand-tied flies, fly lines, leaders and accessories in all price ranges for men, women and children of all abilities.

Castaway also operates a guide service and international adventure travel business that offers guided trips locally, nationally and internationally to some of the world's premium fly fishing destinations.

"This is my greatest adventure so far, right after raising my son, Grayson, with my wife, Susie," Roope said.

In 1990 Loop Tackle were among the first pioneers into Russia’s hidden and long forgotten treasures. The exploration of the southern White Sea coast was undertaken and Russian helicopters were invaluable in exploring countless rivers.
In 1993 we had found what we considered the best of the best and built lodges on Kharlovka, Litza and Rynda amongst others. For years Loop offered what many consider the world’s best Atlantic Salmon and Wild Brown Trout Programs. As many know doing business in Russia can be risky, so Loop sold these programs to Peter Power to focus their adventure travel business in Argentina’s Patagonia.

Last season Peter kindly invited me to be his guest to evaluate his salmon and trout fishery now collectively known as the Atlantic Salmon Reserve. It turned out to be an extraordinary revelation. On arrival I was struck by the results of a 10 year multimillion dollar infrastructure investment where everything is constructed to the highest standards with guests housed in modern Swedish type cabins all with their own bathrooms. Of course the same goes for the recreational and dining facilities with high standards of food and service.

Peter demonstrates his dedication by living in one of his tundra dachas for five months a year exercising a tight discipline with his famous attention to detail over what he calls “my Russian family” so that everything works like clockwork in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Amazingly this extends over 800,000 hectares of tundra through the numerous camp sites for the Wild Brown Trout program so that helicopters are always on time and the tundra is maintained in pristine condition. The Russian only employment policy combined with intensive training has resulted in what may be the best team loyal English speaking guides I have ever encountered.

Peter will be remembered for raising the standards of camp life on the Kola but his passion to salmon and trout conservation will be his legacy. This is expressed in a self imposed “Mandate” which is well worth reading on the ASR website under: http://www.kharlovka.com/atlanticsalmon.html. For eight years he has funded the ASR Protection Program which consists of up to 16 police officers and “runners”, many of them armed, who patrol by air, sea and land. His objective has been to quite literally eliminate poaching over the entire water basin and he has largely succeeded. The results for salmon stocks are astounding. The average number of juvenile salmon in the ASR Rivers has risen from a range of 15 to 25 fish/100 square meters to 100 plus/100 square meters since the program began. The Wild Brown Trout program has been cleverly integrated into this process and may have benefited even more than the Salmon Programs because the process starts in the upper reaches in March & April and does not finish until October when the ice freezes over. Peter is most generous in his praise of the pioneering work undertaken by Loop and readily admits to the inspiration and advice we gave him. Contrary to past expectations the trophy trout fishermen have been reporting ever increasing catch results over the last few years and the rules for conservation are stricter then ever. To be honest I’m not total sure how I have gotten here. It’s not that I don’t remember the trip, but it’s more the route to this specific place that seems a bit foggy these days. If you run in to me along the way, you’d probably thank the fish gods you weren’t trying to pack all this crap around the planet.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been a hunting and fishing junky. I was the kid in the costume jewelry department of Kmart, sorting through strands of fake pearls, looking for that perfect sized bead for my nightcrawler harnesses. Little pink florescent paint, a silver spinner, 3 snelled hooks and presto-bango the worlds greatest walleye lure appeared. Plus I could usually talk my Grandmother in to buying me a brick of 500 Federal .22 shells for $6.95. Nothing was safe!

These days I am torn between being a hardcore fly fisherman and a adventure photo journalist. So what it usually comes down to is a ton of extra shit that I end up trying to pack around the planet. Trust me when I tell you that I am not complaining, but I still wonder how I ended up here, sitting at my desk, which is covered in 5 colors of marabou, 2 external hard drives, 4 bobbin threaders, 3 Lexar high speed card readers, 10,000 packs of krystal flash, an underwater housing, one slightly used jungle cock saddle, and my trusty MacBook Pro. But this is my world these days and I absolutely, undeniably, positively love the chaos. -Tim Pask

Eoin Fairgrieve is a fully qualified casting member of the Association of Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors (A.A.P.G.A.I).

Eoin is highly regarded as one of the world’s leading Speycasting instructors and was a member of the Scottish Flycasting Team that won the 2006 World Speycasting Championships held in Ireland.

Before becoming a full time instructor and Loop’s Speycasting Consultant, Eoin was a guide for many years on one of the famous beats of the River Tweed. He is a regular features writer for the Trout and Salmon magazine and has travelled extensively to Loop camps around the world teaching and guiding fishing parties.

He is a keen salmon conservationist and through his Tweedstart angling project, has introduced hundreds of children to flyfishing. Eoin’s Centre of Excellence is a hugely successful teaching practice located on the River Tweed in Scotland.

The competition is over! Over 120 anglers from 27 countries competed in the World Fly Fishing Championships in Perthshire, Scotland this past week. The anglers pursued brown trout, rainbow trout and grayling in Kinross-shires Loch Leven and the River Tay during the three-day tournament.

Iain is the 2009 World Champion; a supreme achievement at the pinnacle of a staggering personal fly fishing career. His team from England won the team award as well.The French and Scots finished in second and third place respectively.

Iain Barr won the World Championship with the Multi 8100 rod and a CLW5/8 reel.

After an unusually windy April and first half of May the weather finally went back to normal conditions in the Caribbean for this time of the year. The typical May-June weather is low wind to nearly flat calm until 2 pm, when the wind picks up a bit, followed by some rain showers in the evenings and nights. The rest of the season from June and into first week of October usually has good weather conditions and excellent fishing, but of course there are no guaranteesfor weather anywhere in the world. According to Ulysses and Samuel, that has guided the area for 20 year, these are normal conditions.

Last week I focused on flats fishing. To see a tarpon, and cast to it with precision, without scaring the fish, see the tarpon eat the fly and then try to set the hook is a fantastic challenge. Pure adrenaline and a bone shaking experience!

The 5 days of fishing the flats resulted for me in 35-40 hookups with 7 landed to the boat. Weight ranged between 40lb – 115lb, with a majority around 70-80lb. As said, it’s not easy to set the hook and to calculate the power and timing needed for a correct hooking. I must admit I lost some flies and leaders as well as doing all beginner mistakesover and over again.All in all one of my best fishing weeks ever even if the guides said it was not a top week.

Some anglers preferred the channels and the big 3-meter deep basin. There were days when they saw fish rolling everywhere and had lots of hookups, fish jumping, and also quite a lot of fish landed. Most of the fish in these places were over 100lb with the biggest landed to the boat weighing in at 140lb. The stories were of course of the even bigger ones that could not be landed.

Precision rescue casts Sandy River fisherman as hero

Bill Monroe/The OregonianDon Elder of Gresham used his spey-casting rod to help rescue three people from possibly drowning in the Sandy River on Sunday.

Don Elder of Gresham didn't expect to catch anything Sunday afternoon when he waded through the crowd at Oxbow Regional Park and into the Sandy River to practice his fly-casting technique.

But three people he pulled to the shoreline with a bright chartreuse and orange, salmon-strength class fly line are thankful he's getting better.

Elder, 52, saved a man, his small sister and his fiancee from the Sandy's deep and numbing snowmelt-fed water about 2 p.m. Sunday as they were swept toward rapids near Buck Creek, upriver from Oxbow's boat ramp.

Metro, which operates the park, confirmed the story Thursday but said the holiday weekend was so hectic an incident report had not been completed.

Heather Coston, a Metro spokeswoman, said a man known only as Dean and the two others apparently were swimming at the mouth of Buck Creek when they became caught in the Sandy's current.

Elder, an award-winning rivers advocate who is the director of major gifts for the Western Rivers Conservancy, said he and his wife, Michelle Kenney, spent the weekend camping near the park's boat ramp.

He went upriver in the afternoon to practicing his casting but "without much hope of catching a fish."

"I heard screaming in the middle of the river," Elder said. "It took five or 10 seconds before I realized someone was in pretty desperate trouble. But what do you do first? Out in the middle of the river was a man clutching a very small girl. Between us in the water was a young woman.

"I was wearing waders and boots, so it wasn't very practical to try to get to them. If I became part of the problem, it wouldn't help anyone. The only safe way was to bite off the fly, so I (bit off the leader), and before I realized what I was doing, I started casting to them."

Elder's first cast was to the woman between him and the man. She grabbed the line and he lowered his rod, "stripping" her in a bit -- making short tugs on the line -- as she held on and the current drew her toward the shoreline. By then, others had gathered and waded out to help her from the shallows.

After she released the line, Elder said, he ran downriver to within range of the man and little girl. They were approaching the upper end of the rapids near the boat ramp but were farther from Elder than the woman was. On his first two casts, either he missed the mark or the man didn't see the line.

On his third cast, though, Elder said, "The man seemed to realize what to do and grabbed it with his free hand."

Elder said he hung on, again stripping a little line as he worked his way downriver to where the two came to shore, still gripping the brightly colored fly line. Elder estimates it to be at least 100-pound test strength, strong enough to hold someone in the water. And he was spey-casting, a method used for steelhead and salmon that involves larger rods and reels than those used for trout.

Someone waded out and grabbed the girl, and Elder wrapped his arms around the man to help him ashore.

"He kept saying 'Thank you, thank you,' then he passed out," Elder said.

Largely ignoring a bystander who mistakenly chided him for continuing to fish through the emergency ("Everyone else knew what I was trying to do; we laughed about it later," Elder said), and still in his waders and boots, Elder ran up the riverbank a couple of hundred yards to his campsite.

Also ignoring his wife's questions about what was going on, Elder jumped in his car to race to park headquarters for more help. Cell phone coverage is limited in that part of the Sandy River canyon, about eight miles east of Gresham.

Meanwhile, rafters had floated the man downriver to the boat ramp, where Kendra Carrillo, a park ranger, arrived. He was taken to a hospital.

Metro spokeswoman Coston said the man's mother called Carrillo later in the afternoon to report all three were recovered and safely at home.

Spring drownings are common on the Sandy and Clackamas rivers, but none of the three in the water was wearing life jackets, Elder said.

Relieved at "the positive outcome," Elder doesn't know whom he saved. He was to leave this morning for a four-day float down a remote section of the John Day River.

Before leaving, though, Elder said the incident is a good reminder for the coming hot weekend weather that rivers are "always more powerful than they look."

He echoed experts who say it's especially crucial to stay out of the water in the spring -- no matter how hot it gets -- because rivers are running high with fresh snowmelt.

"I had just been standing there," Elder said, "thinking what a wonderful amenity Oxbow Park is, 1,200 acres (and another 3,000 acres upriver purchased by Western Rivers Conservancy) so close to a million people."

Australia on a golden trevally estimated at 10kg plus. The goldie was
swimming with two large shovel nosed rays on the beach. It monstered a white
clouser and then took 20 minutes to land on a #10wt outfit with 9kg tippet.
The new black Speedrunner performed flawlessly.

Megaloop - This longtail tuna was estimated at 28kg and is one of the
largest taken on fly (if not the largest). It was sightcast on the beach at
Hervey Bay Australia with a 4/0 clouser on a #12 wt outfit with 9kg tippet.
It headed for deep water at warp speed with an initial run about 200 metres.
It took 25 minutes to land. The drag on the Megaloop performed flawlessly
and the large arbor made short work of retrieving line. The same outfit
dealt with 9 more sight-cast longtail tuna that morning ranging from
12-20kg.

The Speedrunner and the Megaloop are the perfect reels for big fast fish on
the flats - light, super-large arbor, good line capacity and excellent
drags. What more could you want?

It's that magical time of year when these monster Cutthroat begin to cruise the edges of the lakes in search of prey! Bottom line, Lahontan Cutthroat kick ass!!!

We were able to pull what was left of this Northern Pike Minnow out of his throat and with a little bit of reviving he swam away. Unless he rapidly changed his eating habits my guess is he probably isn't going to make it. Gluttony's a mother!!

When I was in the Seychelles I caught a giant trevally estimated at 120 lbs on your Loop Opti Big.

I hooked the fish on the beach and it took me out to 600 feet of water then back to the beach.

I had your drag winched down to the absolute max and the reel was superb.

Smooth as can be and the fast retrieve made the fight much easier for me.

The GT measured 122cm to the fork.

So far it's held up to big sharks and 30 lb jacks.

Local fly fishing prodigy has gone global to live angler’s dream

Hooked at an early age

Now: Gonzaga men’s basketball coach Mark Few beams over a 50-pound Alaska king salmon he landed with the help of fly fishing guide Joe Roope Jr., who’s soaking wet after belly-flopping on the lunker to keep it from breaking off in a log jam. “Few’s a competitor on the river, too,” Roope recalled. “We all wanted that fish.”

He rose to the occasion in the Coeur d’Alene Holiday Inn parking lot 23 years ago like a stubborn trout drawn to a drifting fly.

Joe Roope Jr., a partner in the two-man operation called River Run Fly Shop, put on a pleasant face and shook his client’s hand before crawling back to his nest in the rear of the pickup’s king cab.

Meantime, Joe Roope Sr., the other partner, checked the tie-downs on the drift boat before driving onto Interstate 90 toward Montana’s Clark Fork River.

“Reminds me of a good mule,” said Joe Sr., glancing back at his already-snoozing son. “Put him in a field, he works; put him in a barn, he sleeps.”

Too many 16-hour days will take the fire out of any guide, even an 18-year-old fishing prodigy who sold the first fly he tied at the age of 12.

But young Joe bounced to life at the Clark Fork as though he smelled the action to come. He spotted three gulping trout downriver before he’d pulled three times on the oars. The first 18-inch rainbow of the day inhaled the client’s Size 18 Grizzly Wulff on the third cast.

They caught the last fish of the day 10 hours later after Joe had rowed, tended the net, barbecued a shore lunch, and spotted fish without a break.

Then came a two-hour drive home, sorting equipment – perhaps partying with his buddies – and getting ready for the next clients eager to catch trout.

“I was a normal teenager in the sense I was always in a sleep deficit, but that’s about it,” recalled Roope, 41, who owns Castaway Fly Fishing Shop in Coeur d’Alene.

In middle school, while his school mates were at basketball camps and baseball diamonds, young Roope had already formed a business – Little Dutchman Flies – and was well on his way to a career that was merely an extension of a sportsman’s lifestyle.

Roope has landed tons of big fish since then, from king salmon in Alaska to bonefish in tropical waters as well as celebrity clients ranging from PGA Tour winners to Gonzaga men’s basketball coach Mark Few.

A friend of a friend introduced Few to Roope in the early ‘90s.

“They said he liked to fly fish and that’s all that mattered to me,” Roope said. “At that time, Mark was just an assistant coach, making $20-some thousand a year, I’ll bet, if not living on food stamps for all I knew.

“We hit it off, and now we fish as friends.”

Roope said his father taught him how to tie flies “probably so I’d fill his fly box so he could do more fishing.

“I was an introvert, the kid in the back of the class who didn’t say anything. I lived in my own little world, but when the theme was fly fishing, I bloomed.”

That was the ticket to an uncommon connection with adults.

“My big break came at 12, when I was invited to a Federation of Fly Fishers conclave in West Yellowstone by Darwin Atkins, a big name in fly tying.”

Before long Roope was rubbing elbows at fly tying vises with tying gurus, such as Dave Whitlock, Lefty Kreh and Frank Johnson who started Streamside Anglers in Missoula.

“For some reason, tying flies really interested me when a lot of normal kid things didn’t,” Roope said. “And once I got to fish, it was all over. It became an obsession.”

Roope said he still remembers catching his first rainbow out of the Coeur d’Alene River on a Memorial Day weekend.

“I also remember the red velvet of the first bar I went to,” he said. “I was too young to drink, but I was trying to become a member of the North Idaho Fly Casters.

“It was a good ol’ boy club at the time; they met at the Athletic Round Table, smoking cigars, drinking Scotch and talking fishing. They didn’t have kid memberships. I had to pull teeth to be part of the group.”

Indeed, a club member introduced young Joe to his first vice: bamboo rods. “That’s been a lifelong problem for me,” he said, referring to his taste for a piece of equipment that’s time consuming to build and expensive to buy.

He flexed his wings as a guide by taking his brother and new sister-in-law on the first trip down the Coeur d’Alene River in his first johnboat.

“I rowed them down the river and we had a great time,” Joe said. “That’s when I first thought I was going to be a guide.”

An Orvis shop owner in Ennis, Mont., licensed Roope as a guide under his outfitters permit and turned him loose on the Clark Fork.

“I was 17, the minimum age for being a guide at the time,” Roope said.

Joe and his father both failed to pass the Montana outfitter exam. “Neither of us could get the mule packing part,” he explained. “My brother was the only male in the family who could pass all the tests.”

The rise to success was not without its speed bumps.

Working for an outfitter in a shaky second party agreement in 1992, Roope was guiding two anglers in the walk-in section of the St. Joe River when one of the fellows had a heart attack.

“He had to be air-vaced out,” Roope said.

“To make things worse, the other client was an undercover agent there to root out this new rogue guiding outfit on the St. Joe.

“All the paperwork wasn’t right for my license and I got cited and fined. It was right before my dad died.

“When the undercover agent, Joe Blackburn, came to the board of outfitters hearing I figured I was done for it as a guide. But Joe stood up and told them it was one of the best fishing trips he’d been on and that I deserved to be an outfitter.”

Roope lived the angler’s dream in the period just before his dad passed away.

“I had a winter job opening the lifts at Silver Mountain and making the first tracks down the new snow, but I had to give that up for guiding bonefishing trips in the tropics,” he said.

“I’d do saltwater, then head to Alaska for spring steelheading for three or four weeks, then back home to row a boat on the local rivers and work in the shop with dad into August, then head up to Alaska again for silvers.”

From 1995 through 2004, Roope logged 67 weeks at Christmas Island, a remote Australian territory in the Indian Ocean.

“I was the only white-boy guide in a Fourth World country 100 miles north of the equator,” he said. “But in 1999, I was the first guide to build a free enterprise lodge there. Before the dot-com bust, there was plenty of capital.

“I sold the place to a partner. It was either that or not stay married.”

Argentina is Roope’s latest fishing frontier, but he says he’s spending less time guiding nowadays and more time managing 18 guides and working in the fly fishing industry.

“I’ll talk to anybody about fly fishing, but I let my excellent staff deal with entry-level anglers, the building block of the business.

“Last year I guided about 25 days, mostly on referrals, then I fished another 25-30 days on my own with friends.

“Funny how it goes. My wife Suzy and I have a 2-year-old son. Mark Few told me for years that as good as I had it as a guide, I shouldn’t miss out on being a dad.

“Now I realize why sometimes a guy just can’t break off for three days just to go fishing.”

Casting Lesson of the Week - The Snake Roll

This weeks cast, the Snake Roll, is probably the best doublehand cast out there for a quick, precise direction change. As demonstrated in the video it can be done from both river right and river left casting positions. This cast can also be performed with singlehand rods, and is very effective along brushy banks that eliminate all possibilities for a standard overhead back cast. The most important factor in executing this cast is the size of the circle you make with the tip of your rod which will determine the position for the line anchor. Too large of a circle places the anchor too close to you and can result in a smack in the back of the head by the fly. Too small of a circle and the anchor will set too far away creating loop that will collapse on itself. The desired line anchor position is about 6-8 feet to the side of your body you are casting from. Enjoy!!

Casting Lesson of the Week - The Perry Poke

This weeks casting lesson deals with one of the most versatile Doublehand Casts out there, the Perry Poke. This is a great cast to teach beginners as it emphasizes building a perfect D Loop 2 times during the cast. As mentioned in the video, it is also a great cast to employ when fishing Skagit style heads. That said, it can also be extremely effective with Scandi/Shooting head line systems as well. One component of the cast to pay close attention to is the line dump that takes place in the middle of the cast. When dumping the line, make sure and take the rod tip all the way down to the surface of the water to allow all of the line pile into the water. This has 2 purposes 1) it allows the line to anchor properly, creating a better D Loop and 2) it puts the rod tip in perfect starting position to form the second D Loop resulting in a cleaner cast.

Early Season Tarpon fishing has been great when you can hit it right and the weather/wind are in your favor. I recently got out with a buddy and found about a dozen or so fish "laid up" and holding just under the water surface. After a few failed attempts at trying to get the fly where it needed to be (directly in front of their face) we managed to get a medium sized fish to accept the presentation with abandon. This fish freight trained about 200yards in under 30seconds all the while jumping and thrashing. The Opti Big managed to handle the strain and performed flawlessly. Once we regained the backing I was able to put the hammer down with the Opti Salt 12 and really muscle the fish towards the boat. This rod is a true performer and the extra fighting grip is a great feature for big fish fights.

The fish in the previous post are Black Drum. We estimated that the fish we got were in the 35lb range although there were larger fish in the school. These fish were all caught in our home waters of Tampa Bay within 3-5ft water, the crazy part was even though it was that deep these fish were still sticking their tails out of the water while eating off the bottom!? It's unreal! We were using intermediate lines to help keep the fly down and casting above the school, letting them overtake the fly and doing a very slow strip. These are the first BD of this size that we have hooked on fly so we were not too sure what to tie up. I figured something dark, buggy, and weighted enough to get down into their feeding zone (on the bottom!)

BD Crab Thing

Black Drum are notoriously blind and usually can only sense something if is directly in front of their face. If all goes good during your strip you will feel steady tension, the fish is on, and now it's time to set the hook. Once you get a solid hook up and these fish realize it they are off and running. Now these are not long runs but they are incredibly strong fish with each fight lasting about 15-20min. They're not the smartest fish in the world but they sure fight like hell!

The additional fore grip on the rod was ideal for this type of down and dirty grudge match. We were really able to put the breaks on these fish with Loop's Evotec HD 9/13 reel, their Power Matrix drag system would simply not give up!

Fighting the good fight

I was looking through some images today and ran across some butt kicking fight sequences, and thought I would post a few. For those of you who don't already know, Giant Trevelly's are as tough as they come, and we spent months hunting them on the flats on Christmas Island. Amazing fish that will tear off 400 yards of backing on the first run...Ed Sadvar just trying to hold his ground. Notice the angle of the backing and will understand it when I tell you that fish was hundreds of yards away on the far side of this bay.

This is still the biggest GT I have even seen landed. I don't have a clue how much it weighed, but it would have shattered the existing world record for sure. Notice the sweat on Ed' hat and you might have an understanding of this battle.

Ed hooked this fish off the beach and then we had to chase it with a skiff. The boat actually hurt our abilty to put pressure on the fish, so he ended up getting close to shore and jumping off the boat.
You will notice Ed's shirt is completely wet. Things get a bit wild when you are landing these amazing fish, and things just go wrong, but this time we were able to tail him for a quick photo before the release.
My wife Sonya is amazing. Yes I am bragging, but I have seen her whip to many big fish to not give her the props she deserves. Kicking butt!!!
Giants are one of the coolest looking fish I have yet to see, and they are easily revived and released, which makes them a great inshore game fish. Sonya has landed her share of these great fish.

Guess I'll go shovel the show off my driveway.. Crap

From time to time we will call on the Loop Army to act on behalf of something that makes a difference in saving WILD FISH and WILD PLACES. This is one of those times!!!

When you signed the petition to enforce the Fisheries Act on the salmon feedlots, you checked the box that said you would be willing to help.

It is essential that we build up the names on this petition because the more of us there are, the harder it will be for government to close the door on our request to protect the wild salmon.

I realize Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is not going to willingly force compliance from the fish “farm” industry, but that is the law and public pressure will help.

Marine Harvest has appealed the BC Court decision because they are concerned they may not own their fish once they go into Canadian waters.

Their licences are unconstitutional because they were granted by the Province and they may not own their fish........

Please print this and post wherever you think it might inform people about the petition.

Also post on Facebook and distribute in anyway available to you.

Let me know if you have ideas on how to make people aware that this petition exists. It was signed by over 2000 people with no effort at all, it will be interesting to see how far it can go with some effort.

Loop Army member Kim Nakamura releasing a King salmon on the Ktok River, in Alaska. Kim has been fishing the Multi 9140-4 for 2 full years and loves it. He has it setup with and Opti MegaLoop reel and Skagit line. Boomer casts of well over 100' are not uncommon for Kim, although don't expect to hear any bragging from him. Kim is one of the best anglers I have ever met, but doesn't seem to take it to seriously and just swings, hooks em, release them and repetes it.

Eoin is a fully qualified casting member of the Association of Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors (A.A.P.G.A.I) and World Team Speycasting Champion. At the age of 24, Eoin became one of the youngest ever instructors to qualify in both the A.A.P.G.A.I trout and salmon disciplines and has been professionally teaching fly casting and fly fishing for almost twenty years. Eoin began working as a salmon guide on the famous Makerstoun beat of the River Tweed in 1988, before starting up his teaching practice in 2001 to concentrate on casting instruction and education on the Tweed system. He specialises mainly in teaching modern speycasting techniques in a relaxed and friendly environment at his Centre of Excellence. May-May is partial to the Loop Multi 12' 7 wt. and eventually decided on the Evotech for this setup, although she has a nice Opti reel on her other setup.

Argentina Kings- Part 2 - Loop Army on the Move!

The first pool we arrived at, we immediately saw “head and tails”. Chinooks!!! We hurried, tying leaders on as we stumbled down to the river, just to find out, that they weren't that easy to catch ....
After a few hours and the bright sun slowly covering up behind clouds, walking down the river, we found pools where fish was rolling and jumping, and the first contacts were made.

A rainstorm rolled in from the glaciers, and we decided to wrap up, and wait for the following morning, but I decided to go for a last try in a really nice looking pool, a little up stream from the base-camp. In less than half an hour I landed 2 fish of 94 and 96 cm (37 and 38 inch's) but the storm had rolled in and hammered us back from the river. So we headed for shelter and a few well deserved beers.

The following morning we were back on the river, but after a full nights rain, the river had come up and turned muddy, or more correct white. Salmon were still showing in most pools, but bigger flies seamed to be needed. Since the river is short and the rain stopped early morning water started dropping after a few hours fishing and also clearing a little.

Normally you'd expect Chinooks to prefer flies fished deep, but even in the colored water we had 'em take just a few inches below surface, rising to flies like atlantic salmon would. We started out using Loop's Deep-Diver shooting heads but after the experience with the to many bottom-snags and the fish willing to take high, we changed to the SinkII/SinkIII head, which worked perfectly, and with shortened salmon leaders, it was still possible to make a fairly long underhand-cast right up against the trees that grows along the river bank.

On that day we hooked another 15 fish and landed 9 of 'em, either we'd found the right technique or the salmon just came on because of the higher water, who knows.

The Loop Army “recon-unit” will be back, and as we speak our intelligence-officer in Argentina is setting up a “bridge-head” on the beach at our secret river...........

But for now the river is still only known by few and fished by even less................

Lugar-X- Part 1

As a joined forces operation between Loop Army-Argentina and Scandinavia, I was appointed, “Director of special operations” Scandinavia, to investigate a river only a few have heard of and fewer had fished....

The special unit was out together in the deepest of secrecy, and left Rio Gallegos by dusk.We had to meet our local “scouts” and leave our car further west. Uniforms packed away, but “armory” was difficult to hide. Car left by dawn in the harbor where, a fast-going local transport-unit awaited us, to take us the last bit of the way.

All who'd done military training, knows that you must be prepared for everything when your on a “recon -mission” so we had brought everything from lighter single handed rods to the “heavier artillery” 13' 10-11 weights and lines between intermediate to Deep-Divers. Evo-techs and Classic reels added some extra backing, just in case.....

Of flies we knew nothing but tied up some “El Choique Loco's” (Choique is local for Rhea) but also brought some stealhead flies we've used in Rio Santa Cruz. So we felt good and was ready to explore!

No roads led to our destination, and our transport was made difficult trying to find our way through dangerous passages amongst drifting icebergs, even underneath glaciers where chunks of ice, kept falling off. At our final destination, and according to a true “recon-mission”, we were landed directly on to the beach, the boat pushing straight up on the sand.....

Loop Army “recon-lieutenant” Pollo and Chief of Operations, Gabriel and myself were ready to go fishing unexplored water, but first we needed a game-plan, made by our local “scouts”. Feeling comfortable back in the “uniform” and “weapons” loaded and ready, we took off in local motorized troop-transport vehicles.

Only one road leading up the river we were dropped of on strategic spots, where our scouts, by experience, knew of good holding pools, for the long wanted Chinook.

Armed to the teeth with gear, we unloaded the truck, and made it for the river. Carrying everything with us, where ever we went, leaving no trace of our appearance at the river bank.

Loop Opti Salt “It’s Here!!!”

Sonya and I just returned from some amazing Tarpon fishing and got the chance to fish both the Loop Opti Salt 10 and 12 weight rods. Both rods have the new “X-Grip” on them and I can assure you they are both amazing fish fighting tools, as we landed most of our tarpon in less then 30 minutes.

Of course we also had the Loop Opti Megaloop and Opti Big reels and I have never been more impressed with a big game reel in my life.

We jumped somewhere around 50 tarpon (amazing by any standards), kept the drags tight and our hands far back on the rod handles and just worked them hard. I was amazed how fast we landed these fish.

I think people are going to be very impressed with the new Opti Salt series...
